Quarter Finals

“The best moments usually occur when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.” – Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

It was day 4 of the quarterfinals last Sunday, and my head felt melted (is that the right term?). We had made it through the heats and all that entailed, and I was last to go not because I wanted the adulation of those there, but because logically, it needed to happen that way.

And I could not be bothered.

So I did a 3-minute warm-up and was like just let’s get this done

However after a brief issue with my rope something clicked

Time distorted. I became clearly focused. I felt out of reach from the world around me. Distractions disappeared. The dopamine was rushing through me.

I came back from my 5 minutes of workout meditation more energized. The workout and the environment had given my head a break for just a few minutes or, in professional terms, there was a complete reduction in cognitive load.

So, for yourself, commit to your next workout. Let your mind become engrossed in the activity, and you will feel the benefits in your focus, decisions, and interactions in the hours that follow.

PS: Massive thanks to everyone who came to support and help out last weekend! You really made it feel like a real competition vibe.

See you in class,

Iain
